Sushma Swaraj bats for women reservation

While speaking on the motion of thanks to the presidential address, veteran BJP leader and external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj told the Lok Sabha that Modi government has empowered women.

She said that 25% of the 23 members in the Cabinet are women. A woman has succeeded Modi as Gujarat chief minister and first woman Speaker in Lok Sabha has also been replaced by a senior woman MP (Sumita Mahajan).

Swaraj said that the government will soon bring the women's reservation bill soon and was confident of passing this "milestone legislation."

Addressing the Congress leadership in the Opposition benches, Swaraj said that when this bill was brought in the Parliament by the Congress the BJP had supported it and the Congess should now respond in the same manner.

Swaraj also took a jibe at the Congress for calling the BJP's campaign a "marketing gimmick", saying that the BJP managed to market its product because it was good. Swaraj reminded the Congress that it faced huge defeat due to non-performance and because its "product" was not marketable.

"Let us be clear that the product should be good. If it is not, then marketing will make no impact. Our product was liked by the people because of its quality," Swaraj said.
