Stop politicising rape, PM Modi tells politicians in Lok Sabha

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lashed out at politicians offering outrageous explanations for a spate of rapes in the country, asking them to “stop psychoanalysing these crimes”, in a statesman-like first speech to the new parliament on Wednesday.
Modi appeared to rise above political considerations in taking on lawmakers over their comments on rape, vowing to act tough to tackle sex crimes and urging them to work together to end attacks on women.
He singled out the rape and murder of two girls in Uttar Pradesh’s Badaun, where a political row has erupted as anger mounts over the state government’s handling of the attacks.
“Governments will have to work strictly against this, else our own souls will not forgive us,” Modi told parliament as MPs thumped their desks in agreement.
“That’s why I appeal to all state ministers, all ministers please stop politicising rape.”
