News of new CEO Vishal Sikka cheers Infosys employees, Narayana Murthy's exit a surprise

Narayana Murthy was expected to bring about a positive change in Infosys when he joined a year ago. Hopes ran high among employees since he is seen as a visionary leader and a man of action.

NEW DELHI: Thursday morning, InfosysBSE -0.38 % employees woke up to the news of finally having a new chief executive officer- former SAP board member Vishal Sikka. While the mood is largely optimistic, the exit of executive chairman Narayana Murthycame as a surprise to many.

"As of now people are more surprised by NRN's untimely exit after one year when his and his son's term was five years," said an employee who has been working with the company for over five years.

NRN, as Narayana Murthy is fondly referred to within the company, was expected to bring about a positive change in Infosys when he joined a year ago. Hopes ran high among employees since he is seen as a visionary leader and a man of action. "His presence was encouraging for us, but even before the changes he wanted to bring about could be understood, he has quit. This is disappointing," said another employee based in Bangalore, who has been with the company for a little over two years.

Several others, however feel good about the appointment of an outsider. "It is good that they have finally brought in someone who is not internally associated with the organisation. The leadership at Infosys needed fresh thinking. All the recent senior exits were very worrying for us," said an employee working at one of Infosys' onsite locations.

While it was work as usual for most, discussions over breakfast at several of the IT major's food courts invariably shifted to the new leader. "Sikka will make Infy the new SAP. All the SAP projects here will get a boost now," said a software engineer in jest, over a steaming cup of tea.
