NC now, is NCP next? Cong a liability, allies seek safety in loneliness

Will Sharad Pawar be the next high profile departure? AFP

The Congress’s disastrous defeat in the Lok Sabha elections has turned the axiom “united we stand, divided we fall” on its head where its allies are concerned.
On Sunday, the National Conference and the Congress ended their six- year old partnership and decided to go their separate ways for the assembly elections that are expected in October. The six-year term of the assembly ends in January 2015.
Burdened by negativities like incumbency, the Congress and the NC believe that if they stand united and together their fall could be even greater than if they go it alone. There are fears that the debacle in the parliamentary elections in the state may be replayed in the state elections too. Both the Congress and the NC drew a blank in the Lok Sabha elections in J&K, with even Farooq Abdullah biting the dust in Srinagar in the state whose politics has long been defined and dominated by his family.
